How Dehua Porcelain Flowers Are Handcrafted
In Dehua, China, porcelain flowers take shape through a series of small decisions made by hand: where a petal curves, how its edge opens, and how the layers meet. SUCI Porcelain works with a Dehua partner workshop to make the flowers in our current collection. Watch hands shaping a flower in our workshop footage.
What is Dehua's porcelain heritage?
Dehua has a long tradition of porcelain making. In 2006, Dehua porcelain firing techniques were included in China's first national list of intangible cultural heritage. Read the official listing.
How is a porcelain flower shaped by hand?
In our partner workshop footage, an artisan adds petals, turns the flower and adjusts its form by hand. You can see how a cupped center and each petal edge emerge through touch.

See the real Dehua workshop video to look closely at the handwork.
Why does the surface matter?
Our current flowers have a textured, unglazed porcelain surface. That texture makes the petal details visible and allows a small amount of suitable essential oil to be applied for passive, electricity-free fragrance diffusion. The flowers also support a suitably fitting incense stick as a separate use. The porcelain flower itself collects ash when holding a suitable incense stick. Place it on a stable, heat-resistant surface, and use oil and burning incense separately. Read the oil diffusion guide and incense setup guide before use.
